2019 Composing in the Wilderness Offerings
As we enter our eighth year, we will once again be offering our time-tested field course at Denali, as well as continuing our new (more immersive) adventure trip elsewhere in Alaska.

The Two Adventures:
Dates: July 9-23, 2019
Cost: $1,550 USD (not counting optional flight excursion)
Number of Participants: nine
Locations: Denali National Park, Twin Bears Camp, and Fairbanks
Wilderness Activities: Strenuous day hiking in Denali. Optional flight excursion to Coldfoot and Wiseman (above the Arctic Circle).
Roughing it: The field camp at Denali has canvas/wood frame cabins, a modern pit toilet, and propane cooking. There is potable running cold water, but no showers. While at Twin Bears, composers are housed in rustic cabins and have access to showers, electricity, and full kitchen.
Composing: Pieces must be written in three or four days. That's part of the adventure! Instrumentation (mostly trios and quartets) assigned at random. Pieces must be acoustic.
Performance: Two performances by Corvus in Alaska (Denali and Fairbanks).
Leader: Christina Rusnak
NEW Dates: July 27 through August 8, 2019
NEW Cost: $3,550 USD
Number of Participants: nine
Locations: Anchorage, Prince William Sound, Whittier
Activities: Scenic train ride, six days of sea kayaking, and some modest hiking. Three days of composing in small town of Girdwood.
Roughing it: This is truly a backcountry trip. While kayaking, participants will be sleeping in tents, and eating meals prepared (by our guides) on portable cooking stoves. No running water or bathroom facilities. During the days of composing the group will be in a rented house with full amenities.
Composing: Composers have a couple months to complete pieces. All composers will write for full Corvus ensemble (a mixed quintet). Electroacoustic pieces possible depending on the technical demands.
Performance: Performance by Corvus in New York City at Federal Hall National Memorial.
Leader: Nathan Lincoln de Cusatis
Both adventures are led by adventurer-composer Stephen Lias and provide participants with real-time GPS tracking so their family and friends can follow along online. You're provided with experienced back-country guides, all transportation, and food during all backcountry experiences. Participants will receive full packing lists of what gear and clothing they are responsible for, and what will be provided.
Use the links above to explore the complete details about each trip. Either option is appropriate for trained composers of concert and chamber music from undergraduate through professional. This is not a "class", but a collaborative creative adventure, and we seek talented contemporary composers of all ages, in any style, and from any country.
Applications are no longer being accepted for 2019.
